Malaysia // Visa now a must to enter after approval of Long Term Pass

Malaysian immigration process consists in getting approval on a Long Term Pass application, then enter the country and transform that into a residence card.

.

Prior to 28 December 2021, some nationalities (such as the USA, EU countries, Japan, South Korea) where exempted from visa requirement to enter Malaysia. They could instead tick the “Journey Performed” option before endorsing the Long Term Pass.

Nationals requiring visas to enter Malaysia for short stays (eg. India, China) were already asked to get an entry visa before travelling.

.

Effective 28 December 2021, the “Journey Performed” option will be abolished. As a consequence, the majority of applicants must now get the Visa With Reference (VDR) from the Malaysian diplomatic mission in their departure country before travelling to Malaysia.

Some rare exceptions remain: certain Commonwealth nationalities (eg Singapore the UK, Australia, Ireland) will be exempt from VDR.

.

This adds a few days processing time to the process and needs to be anticipated in the immigration process to Malaysia.
