The French minimum interprofessional growth wage (SMIC) was raised by 2.2% on 1 May 2023. It now amounts to €1,747.20 gross per month, on a 35-work hours per week basis (€20,966.40 gross per year).
This level impacting some of the salary thresholds for foreigners, here are the new minimum salaries to be met for any application filed after 1 May 2023 :
- Passeport talent Salarié en mission (Employee on assignment) (1.8 x SMIC) -> €37,739.52
- Passeport talent Salarié qualifié (Qualified employee) & Jeune entreprise innovante (young innovative company) (2 x SMIC) -> €41.932,80
- Employee (with labor market test) (SMIC) -> €20.966,40
- Employee (with RECE and without labor market test) (1.5 x SMIC) -> €31,499.60
5th raise of minimal wage since Jan 2022, this is a reply to the ongoing inflation, with a clear effect on foreigners. Especially on fresh graduates, who now need to get a salary close to €42K per year to apply for the Passeport talent Salarié qualifié status after their graduation. Putting that into perspective, the required salary was below €36K per year in the early ages of the status in 2016.
It should be reiterated that the salary required for an application for a Passeport talent Carte Bleue Européenne (European Blue Card) is not, for its part, indexed to the SMIC. It is equal to 1.5 times the amount of the average gross annual reference salary, set since the decree of June 20, 2016 at €35,891. The minimum remuneration offered to the applicant for a European Blue Card must therefore be €53,836.50 gross per year, regardless of changes in the minimum wage.
We invite all employers to pay attention to the salary proposed in the new contracts for foreign employees.
